mental health days are necessary

July has felt like such a whirlwind.
So this morning when I woke up next to my five-year-old son I just laid there, enjoyed the melding of his deep, sleepy breaths and the sound of the wind blowing through the Aspen leaves outside the open windows.

And in that moment I decided, we both needed a mental health day.

I remember my mom introducing this concept to me when I was just a little kid. It was my favorite thing and something I have certainly carried through my entire life. A day of just us, making cookies, watching movies, enjoying a slower pace.

Our son is a lot like me in this way. We love people and we love doing things but we both fill up with moments of quiet. I was filled with pride, when at just four, he told a couple of friends, he “needed a minute alone” and he’d be back to play.

Whether you are the most extroverted of extroverts, vice versa or somewhere in between like me, it’s about knowing what you’ve got to give, what fills you up and to listen to what is needed now.

So give yourself a mental health coffee break, walk outside, night with your phone off, whatever it is that you need. And enjoy.
